Welcome to A.R.G.O’s brand new website!

Welcome back, Argonauts! 2023 is upon us and we have many excited things planned for this year!

We are grateful for the members that joined us last year and are very excited to see the revitalisation of our club. You can still expect to receive communications via email and to use our discord server as an informal method of communication, but you can think of this site as having everything you need to know all in one place!

Things to note:
Be sure to find our table at O-Week! We will be doing our best to promote the club and CAH at La Trobe – it would be lovely to see some familiar faces!

In the next few weeks, we will be releasing our Call for Papers for the inaugural edition of our volunteer-run undergrad journal, Muse.

We can’t wait to see you all very soon!

CALL FOR PAPERS Muse vol. 1, no. 1

Ave Argonauts,

A.R.G.O. invites your to submit your work to the inaugural edition of our new undergraduate journal, Muse! This is our Janus edition, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the club. Our theme for this edition is Mythology: Gods & Goddesses.

You may choose to focus on the historical (Klio), poetic (Erato, Euterpe), tragic (Melpomene), epic (Kalliope) aspects – just to name a few – of Mythology: Gods & Goddesses. Be inspired by the Muses and submit a 150-200 word abstract detailing what your essay will be about!

We also encourage the submission of art inspired by our theme! It can be any kind of artwork, but we will need a digital submission.

You’ll also go in the running for the best essay prize (The Golden Fleece) and best artwork prize! The details of which will be revealed soon!
*Note: only undergraduate essays/artworks are eligible for the prizes

CFP closes on the 31st of March, 2023 (end week 5)

Please email your abstracts to argolatrobe@gmail.com with ‘MUSE CFP’ in the subject line. Be sure to include your name, year level and the title of your work in the email.

Who can submit?

  • All LTU undergraduate students are encouraged to submit! (1st year-3rd year) – we want to publish an essay & artwork from each year level!
  • Postgrads (Honours, Masters & PhD students) – we intend on featuring one postgraduate essay to showcase to our classics undergrads the kinds of research they might undertake in the future!

Please not that essays are not expected to make a contribution to the field, but should be your own, original work. You cannot submit any work that has formed part of an assessment. Essays will need to be around 1500 words (do not submit an essay for this CFP, we only require an abstract at this stage).

We understand that at undergraduate level it can be intimidating to come up with your own questions and topics for an essay. Remember that an abstract doesn’t have to have all the answers to your essay! But tell us the brushstrokes of your topic and argument.

Some approaches to the topic include, but are not limited to:

  • The way Greek/Roman gods & goddesses are depicted in modernity (film, tv, books, video games etc.)
  • How/why one particular deity was revered by a city/culture/empire?
  • How/why the image of a god/goddess was used by a particular individual
  • What was the importance of the gods?

Please get in touch if you want to submit an abstract but need some assistance!
